Uber self-driving cars hit San Francisco's streets

Following a pilot program in Pittsburgh two months ago, Uber started public testing of its self-driving cars in San Francisco this week. An unspecified number of Volvo luxury SUVs are being offered to users of the ride-hailing app, with a Uber employee in the driving seat ready to take control of the vehicle if necessary. There are some unique challenges for self-driving vehicles in San Francisco and Uber believes its technology is ready to tackle them. The biggest challenge, however, may come from the California state law that requires a permit for self-driving tests on public roads. Uber argues that the cars are not yet fully autonomous and therefore don’t need the permit.
