When you spend most of your waking hours at work, you want to be sure you're doing work you care about. If you're doing a job you don't really connect with and feel like you don't fit in, you may need to look for a job that better aligns with your personal motives. A mismatch between your job and your motives stops you living up to your potential yet, unlike skills and values, motives can be hard to identify because we're often not conscious of them, says author Carter Cast.
