For years, they've claimed that using a generic introduction for your cover letter like "To Whom It May Concern" or "Dear Sir / Madam" is one of the easier ways to sink your job prospects.
However, thousands of job seekers use "To Whom It May Concern" on their cover letters and still manage to land work. So does starting your cover letter with "To Whom It May Concern" really impact your ability to get hired?
To find out the truth, Resume Companion polled over 1,000 hiring managers from all over the US, asking them if seeing "To Whom It May Concern" on a candidate's cover letter would influence how they viewed them.
The results were decisive: over 83% of hiring managers said that seeing a candidate use "To Whom It May Concern" on their cover letter would have little or no impact on their decision to bring them in for an interview.
This result flies in the face of what career experts have been claiming for years: that by not personalizing your cover letter to the reader, you risk making a bad first impression and hurting your chance of getting called in to further discuss your application.
